“Creating An Intelligent Economy: How the North West Can Lead The Way”
By Dr Peter Doran
Dr Peter Doran lectures in Environmental Planning and Sustainable Development at the School of Law, Queens University Belfast.
He led the joint initiative by Carnegie UK Trust and Queens University Belfast, School of Law on “Wellbeing in Northern Ireland”.
That experience led him to the view that a mid to long-term economic strategy for the North West and the country can be social, ethical and sustainable, given sufficient political commitment to the best international thinking. It’s clear that improving wellbeing and driving economic growth requires a radically different tack.
Dr Doran will invite the Conference to consider the Zero Waste message in the context of exciting new trends in the global economy.
In particular, he will locate Zero Waste within the emergence of the collaborative social economy and the circular economy. In today’s resource-constrained world, our Zero Waste commitment must be set against a backdrop of explosive population growth, rapid urbanisation and climate change which means creating greener products, closing material loops and preventing harm to the environment.
